Malaysian Artists present Cultural Program
in city

GREATER KASHMIR NEWS NETWORK

Jammu, Oct 30: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, today organised the first ever international performance by the artists of Malaysia here at Police Auditorium, Jammu. The programme featured ASWARA (National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Malaysia) which promotes local performances and is champion of Malaysian identity in traditional and contemporary dance.
ASWARA Dance Company is now a shining example of Malaysia’s plurality embodied in its repertoire that transcends borders of race, religion and genres. Dancers are trained in multiple languages of all Malaysian traditional genres as well as ballet and contemporary techniques too. The company has performed at international dance festivals including Hong Kong Dance Teens, Dance XChange in the Philippines, Muara Festival and Contact in Singapore, World Islamic Economic Forum in Indonesia, Pondok Bantan and Our Roots Right Now in Thailand, as well as every major Malaysian dance festival.
The programme opened with Indian Classical dance ‘Bharatanatyam’, followed by Alarippu, Raagam: Mohanam and Taalam: Kandam  and concluded with Varnam Swami Naan Unthan Adimai, Raagam: Natai Kurinji and Talam: Adhi.
For the second half of the Malaysian programme, there was a combination of classical and folk Malay Dance of Malaysia. Afterwards, a folk dance called, Joget Cak Kun Cak, was presented by the artists. The grand finale finale dance was Zapin Pekajang.  Zapin means foot step. This dance is inspired by the Arab community, which is believed to have been introduced by Arab Muslims in the fourteenth century.
The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Shantmanu, was the chief guest on the occasion, whereas Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, presided over the function.
Earlier, welcoming the august gathering, the Regional Director of ICCR Jammu, Balwant Thakur gave a detailed account of the activities initiated by ICCR in Jammu.

After the inception of ICCR in Jammu, this is the fourth international cultural group brought here for Jammuites, he said. Earlier, presentations by the countries like Zambia, Democratic Republic of Laos, and Poland were also held here successfully, he added.

Thakur further informed that ICCR is mandated to bring nations together through cultural diplomacy, with the mission to take India to the world and world to India. The council organises series of cultural exchange programmes and the show of Malasiyan artists is one of them, he said. Its objectives, he said, are to actively participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes pertaining to India’s external relations, to foster and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other countries, to promote cultural exchanges with other countries and people, and develop relations with national and international organisations in the field of culture.

At the conclusion, ICCR honored the artists with the presentation of shawls. The guest artists who were honored included, Mohd Yunus Ismail, Norbaizura Abd Ghani, Mohammad Khairi Mokthar, Mohd. Naim Syahrazad, Mohamad Azizi Mansor and Rizianah John.
