Jang S Verman: Synthesizing human nature and art
Madhav Sharma Painting is usually a visual art, not associated with any language but this works from the internationally famed artist Jang S Verman from Jammu of J&K State speaks the perspective lines drawn to get a life on the canvas. Today, Verman is at his best after devoting his whole life to art and giving life to his perceptions in a unique manner. "With a creative and an imaginative mind, Jang S. Verman is known by his " uniqueness and perceptions' clearly speaking on the canvas and as a creative form, recalled Harsh Vardhan another nationally and internationally acclaimed artist. He said that most of Jang's works are as intangible as life itself, leaving the viewer with a whiff of something delicate, insubstantial, yet very much there for the viewer which I can't express but the viewer itself feels the difference. Jang S Verman sharing his journey as an artist and as a painter evoked deep from his mind a nd recollecting from his past that right from his childhood the patterns of lines fascinated him. As a child I would just wonder and try to play with lines making sketches and drawings. Initially they seemed even raw to me but later they became clearer and distinct, he said but quickly added that unlike other youth I first graduated then looked for time to satisfy my inner self as an artist. "For me painting is about engaging all the senses by capturing the soul of emotions, of form objects and images. I consciously steer the imagery towards depictions of memories and imaginings," he said further adding "I find inspiration in nature, through memories and travel, and in unexpected things too.' I frequently find that what inspires me in turn manifests through the act of painting itself, through my methods of painting or other sorts of works including new 'electro mix media' methodology" Referring to the new type of work, he said that as very few people barring few around my artistic sphere know that I am allergic to some typical smells including the 'thinner (oil) used for oil painting thus I tried hands on this type and named this new art as 'mix media'. "It was in the 70's that I fell sick and after a lot of investigations the doctors concluded that, in fact, it was medium, the oil colours, which had caused severe allergy to him, he recalled adding, "This did not shatter my hopes.' He said, "Instead I started experimenting with different mediums and in the late 70's devised an entirely new medium, which he named "electro-photo mix media". "His new medium includes colours, but no oil. Jang is still experimenting to further enrich his electro-photo mix media”. Explaining further he said that he uses photographs and different kinds of textures, which are xeroxed before adding more imaginative details on such pieces of paper by his perceptions and the ideas already conceived prior to the work. After years of devotion and commitment to the new medium, I found myself convenient to portray the state of human mind with imaginations, he said and added the works in due course of time were appreciated for their depth, colour harmony and effects of textures." Recalling from his long journey, he recollected that like other artist he also visualises the human mind in varied situations and uses different textures, colours, forms and motifs to represent his philosophy on paper. Briefing about his works he recalled that his work "the Mandap of Life" is one such example where he had represented the planet of earth and the pillars show various other aspects of the situation. In one of his works collage titled "Man the Saint- the Devil", Jang briefed that he collected discarded photographs and arranged them in an interesting form where half of the face of a man reflects serenety, relaxed mood and meditating eyes, all in while light. But the other half of the face shows his devilish character as seen in exaggeratedly wide eyes, broken teeth and a large black area. "I try to explain a theme for which I not only draws different figures and motifs, but also use colours keeping in view the feelings or mood or the environment, which I intend to depict in my works, he added. Interestingly, this artist of a philosophical bent of mind hails from the family of Army men. Jang had done graduation like any other student with philosophy and literature but the artist within him forced him to get admission in Diploma in painting way back in 1979. Pertinent to mention, he also had studied psycho-graphology and did B.Ed and obtained a Master of Art degree in English. Presently Jang is teaching drawing at Kendriya Vidyala 1 in Jammu and is pruning latent talent of his students. Besides various honours and awards to his name, Jang has been awarded by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi Punjab Lalit Kala Academy and Himachal Pradesh State Museum, Shimla for his outstanding works of art.
